Trying a lesson doesn't send us anything

The free trial lessons run entirely in your browser. Nothing about which lesson you try, which answers you pick, or how you score is sent to our servers.

What we collect when you join the waitlist

If you sign up for the founding-families waitlist, we collect: who you are (parent abroad, learner or parent in South Africa, adult learner, or teacher), your first name, your email address, and the country you live in. Depending on your answer, we may also collect your children's ages or grade, how much Afrikaans is spoken at home, what you're interested in, or (for teachers) a short note about your teaching experience. We also record that you ticked the consent box, and when.

We only collect this because you choose to give it to us by filling in the form, and only with your tick-box consent to be emailed.

Why we collect it

We use this information to let you know when classes open, invite you to your free trial class, plan class times around where our sign-ups live, and send occasional updates if you've opted in. We don't use it for anything else, and we don't sell or share it with anyone outside Praatjie.

Where it's stored

Sign-ups are stored in a database hosted on Cloudflare's infrastructure. Access is restricted to the Praatjie team through a private, token-protected admin tool.

When someone joins the waitlist, a short note is posted to our internal team chat so we know to follow up — it only ever includes your role, country, and interests, never your name or email address.

Anti-abuse data

To stop the sign-up form being spammed, we briefly store a salted, one-way hash of your IP address — never the IP address itself, and never linked to your name or email. It's kept for a maximum of one day and used only to limit how many times one connection can sign up.

Cookies and analytics

We only use analytics cookies if you accept them in the cookie banner. See our Cookie Policy for the details, including what Google Analytics collects if you opt in.

International transfers

If you accept analytics cookies, some information is processed by Google LLC (United States) under Google's own privacy policy. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, operates a global network, so your sign-up data may be processed outside South Africa as part of how that infrastructure works.

How long we keep it

We keep waitlist sign-ups until classes open and you've had the chance to join, or until you ask us to remove your details, whichever comes first. Email legal@praatjie.com any time to see, correct, or delete what we hold about you.

Your rights

Under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), and similar laws if you're joining us from abroad, you can ask us to access, correct, or delete your information, object to how we use it, or withdraw your consent at any time. Email legal@praatjie.com and we'll sort it out.

Children's information

Where the waitlist form asks about a child (for example, their age or grade), that information is given to us by the parent or guardian signing up — not collected directly from the child. We don't knowingly collect personal information directly from children through this site.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product develops. We'll update the date at the top when we do.
